CAMBRIDGE 9701 · PATHWAY DECISION

Cambridge Chemistry 9701: AS Only, Staged or Full A Level?

A family decision guide that works backwards from the required qualification, school route, examination year, readiness and practical access.

The family discussion often begins with “AS only or the full A Level?” A responsible decision cannot come from comparing those labels alone. First clarify the required qualification, school provision, examination year, current work, available time and laboratory preparation.

This guide prepares the decision. The school or examination centre confirms official entries and carry-forward; the destination institution confirms its admissions requirement.

The examination year determines the syllabus

A learner examined in 2025, 2026 or 2027 uses the 2025–2027 syllabus. A learner examined between 2028 and 2030 checks the corresponding 2028–2030 syllabus. The examination year—not the year study begins—determines the version.

This matters particularly in a staged route. If AS and later Papers 4–5 touch different syllabus periods, the centre must check current entry and carry-forward rules. An old teaching note or forum answer cannot do that.

The three routes are not a ranking

Three assessment routes for Chemistry 9701

  1. 1

    AS only

    Papers 1–3AS Level result

    AS is the intended endpoint.

  2. 2

    Staged A Level

    Papers 1–3 → eligible carry-forward → Papers 4–5A Level result

    Confirm eligible series and deadlines.

  3. 3

    All papers together

Papers 1–5 in one seriesA Level result

Readiness is needed across both levels and practical skills.

The school or examination centre confirms entries and carry-forward eligibility.

RoutePapersOutcomeMain confirmation question
AS onlyPapers 1–3 in one seriesAS Level, a–eIs this sufficient for the intended institution or school purpose?
Staged A LevelPapers 1–3, then Papers 4–5 with eligible carry-forwardFull A Level, A*–EWhich later series is eligible and which entry option is required?
All five togetherPapers 1–5 in one seriesFull A Level, A*–EIs there enough content, time and practical readiness for one series?

The two full A Level routes can lead to the same qualification level through different timing and workload. AS only may be the appropriate endpoint. No route is automatically easier, better or more prestigious.

Current general Cambridge guidance states that an eligible complete AS result may be carried forward towards the full A Level up to twice within 13 months of the original series. The school or centre must still confirm the 9701 entry, eligible series and option code.

Schools often use “A2” for the second year or additional content, but it is not a standalone Cambridge qualification. In staged completion, the learner takes Papers 4–5 and an eligible complete AS result contributes to the final A Level. A result from one AS component cannot be carried forward as a complete AS award.

If AS has already been completed, record the original series, centre and candidate details and ask the centre for confirmation. The general 13-month rule also has series-specific details; the actual entry option, not a family calculation, is decisive.

Make the decision in six-question order

Ask the questions in the right order

  1. 1What qualification is required?
  2. 2Which routes does the school or centre support?
  3. 3Which syllabus and carry-forward conditions apply?
  4. 4What does current evidence show?
  5. 5Does the calendar include enough preparation and buffer?
  6. 6Confirm and set a review date
This prepares the discussion; it does not generate an automatic route recommendation.

1. What qualification is required?

Check the official page of the possible university, school or programme. Is AS sufficient, or is the full A Level required? Is there a minimum grade? Is Chemistry required, recommended or one of several options?

2. Which route does the school or centre support?

Not every theoretically possible sequence is offered by every school. Confirm the teaching sequence, examination entry, laboratory preparation and decision deadline.

3. What is the examination year and matching syllabus?

Record the intended AS series and later full A Level series separately. A staged route needs these dates for responsible carry-forward checking.

4. What does the student’s current work show?

Do not use one percentage. Inspect several tasks, timed and untimed work, and how much prompting was needed to solve and correct them.

5. Is there enough time and genuine practical access?

Put other subjects, mock examinations, travel, illness buffer and supervised Paper 3 laboratory practice into the calendar. A plan that works only when every week is perfect has no real contingency.

6. Who confirms the choice, and when will you review it?

Record the centre’s confirmation, chosen route, unresolved conditions and a review date. A required qualification is an external condition; current readiness is a separate, changeable state.

Readiness appears across five areas

The profile need not be equal. A learner may be conceptually strong but uncertain under time, or numerically secure with little direct laboratory experience. The largest risk must be considered alongside the time available to repair it.

Attach a dated example to every row. Replace “good calculations” with “in the 14 August Paper 2 task, units and mole ratios were handled independently”. Replace “weak independence” with “correction began only after prompting in three separate tasks”. Concrete evidence makes change visible at the next review.

Do not calculate one total score from the five areas. A high average can hide that Paper 3 laboratory provision is unresolved or that all successful work used open notes. The profile exists to name the next risk to test.

Four family situations, not four automatic rules

Four family scenarios

A · AS is the intended endpoint

Context

The programme currently requires AS.

Evidence to gather

Papers 1–3 profile and laboratory preparation.

Likely discussion

Prepare a complete AS outcome without treating it as unfinished.

Still confirm

Future institution requirements.

B · Staged route with a sound AS base

Context

The school supports staging and the AS work is reliable.

Evidence to gather

Consistency, error review and next-stage timetable.

Likely discussion

Complete AS strongly and preserve foundations.

Still confirm

Carry-forward series and deadlines.

C · Late change to all papers

Context

The student now needs the full A Level in one series.

Evidence to gather

Coverage, timed work, practical readiness and buffer.

Likely discussion

Test whether the plan has genuine capacity.

Still confirm

Entries and laboratory arrangements.

D · Knowledge strong, independence fragile

Context

Untimed scores are high but prompting remains heavy.

Evidence to gather

Timed completion, revision log and workload.

Likely discussion

Readiness includes execution, not only knowledge.

Still confirm

Whether independence can grow within the timetable.

Illustrative, not prescriptive.

AS as the intended endpoint: where the destination and school support it, prepare Papers 1–3 as a complete qualification. Staged route with a secure AS base: preserve AS knowledge before Papers 4–5 and confirm carry-forward officially.

Late change to all five papers: needing the qualification does not prove that all content and skills fit the calendar. Strong untimed result with fragile independence: gather short closed-note or timed evidence rather than another heavily prompted task.

Set a review date and name the new evidence that will reopen the decision. This stops the same family debate restarting every week without new information.

Changing route is not automatically failure or promotion. A new university aim, school move, health situation, entry constraint or sustained workload change may justify it. Review the change together with completed components, deadlines and the preparation still missing.

School or examination centreEntry, components, series, option code, carry-forward and Paper 3 arrangements
University or destination institutionIts own current admissions and qualification requirements
TutorConceptual and skill baseline, causes of lost marks, repair plan and evidence of progress

A tutor cannot finalise entry, guarantee carry-forward or replace the laboratory programme. A tutor can identify the first weak skill in current work and help gather independent evidence of repair.

Once the route is clear, continue with the relevant paper work: the Papers 1, 2 and 4 preparation guide and Papers 3 and 5 skills guide.

The complete AS result must come from one series; arbitrary components from different series cannot be assembled. Two carry-forwards do not permit a third even within the 13-month window. This guide does not confirm a specific 2027 AS → 2028 full A Level entry option: ask the centre to verify the 9701 option for those series.
